A very pretty city, which deserves the label " Ville d'art et d'histoire" from the Ministry of Culture, with its collegiate church and its old quarters. It is also beautiful because it is built on the banks of the Doubs, which has always contributed to its activity and development, including river tourism today. Situated between Dijon and Besançon, in the centre of the new Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, Dole was the capital of the County when it depended on Burgundy, then on the Habsburgs. After the annexation by Louis XIV, Dole lost its role as capital to Besançon. Welcome to the birthplace of Louis Pasteur, whose father was a tanner. You can visit his house on the banks of the canal. A stroll through the streets is a stroll through history: from the medieval vestiges when Dole was home to the Parliament and the University of the County, to the tanners' quarter, through the buildings of the 18th century, a time of cultural and architectural renaissance after the ravages of the wars waged by the kings of France against the independent County. Louis XI had it burned down in 1479. And from there, the motto: "Comtois, surrender! Nenni, my faith! In this eventful history, the collegiate church has remained proudly standing, dominating the town, visible from everywhere, seeming to recall the golden age of the County. But the town is not static. It benefits from a very dynamic cultural policy: concerts, exhibitions, guided tours... A gastronomic appeal as well with its good little restaurants and its highlight of the Weekend of the Chat perché. Whatever the season you come, you will not be bored.
