From medieval times until the end of the 19th century (1895), the village was known as Bugadan. This toponym derived its name from the Old French buer, meaning to wash, to leach; and bugada, which in Spanish and Provençal means "steam". It then took the name of the Bégadan marsh. The marsh was drained at the end of the 17th century. A few kilometers to the northeast of Lesparre-Médoc, the port of By was very active in the 18th and 19thcenturies . It was mainly used for grain and wine trading. It's a pleasant place to stroll and enjoy the beautiful panorama of the Gironde.
