Built on the borders of the Périgord Noir, Quercy and Agenais regions, the bastide of Villefranche-du-Périgord was constructed in 1261 by Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of Saint-Louis. In spite of the numerous conflicts, it has kept its original aspect with a very regular plan where the streets intersect at right angles, its square with the market hall and the covered market, places of trade in the past, and old half-timbered houses with turrets. The church, a vast building with a strange façade reminiscent of the Spanish style, dates from the 19th century. Villefranche is located in the heart of the chestnut country and its cep market in the fall attracts many gourmets
