On the outskirts of Canari, high above the sea, stands a ghostly building, the former asbestos factory, where asbestos ore was mined from World War II until 1965. You can then compare the island's two dominant religious styles, by visiting the churches of Santa-Maria-Assunta and Saint-François. Despite 18th-century alterations, the former remains a fine example of Pisan Romanesque (1st construction 12th century), while the latter is Baroque in style. A 16th-century Franciscan convent, in operation until the French Revolution, was converted for a time into a police station. Today, it houses B&Bs and a costume museum.
