Passing through Verzy also means continuing into the forest to see the famous scythes. The weeping branches of these strange trees replant and form other trees, which grow slowly and live to a ripe old age. These beech trees, known as "tortillards", are no more than 3 metres high, with branches and twigs that descend in a curious intertwining pattern. The Mount Sinai observatory is signposted on the road leading to it, and a path on the right leads to a lovely viewpoint over the region. The chapel on the other side of the road is dedicated to Saint Basle, a reminder that an abbey was founded here in 664 by Saint Nivard.
