Millions of bottles rest in 110 kilometers of cellars. Unesco-listed Avenue de Champagne, home to the major wine producers and merchants, is also famous for its opulent 19th-century buildings in Renaissance and neo-classical styles. Founded in the5th century by tanners who settled along the stream (the Cubry), Épernay belonged to the Counts of Champagne as early as 1024, before becoming part of the Kingdom of France in 1284. In 1515, François I offered the seigneury to his mother Louise de Savoie. Repeatedly destroyed, two-thirds of the town was wiped out during the Great War.
