On the hillside south of the Saint-Thierry massif, the small village of Chenay overlooks the Vesle valley. According to legend, the fountain of the old Chenay washhouse on the site of the ferruginous spring was prized by Henry IV for its water with a thousand virtues. On its heights, Chenay shelters a remarkable military work of the "Séré de Rivières" type. Built in 1880 of ashlar and millstone, the Chenay fort was used to reinforce the Saint-Thierry fort. It housed 130 men and 8 cannons. Privately owned, the fort is now overgrown but is still in a good state of preservation.
