This village dominates the Marne valley at a height of 148 metres. The gigantic statue of Pope Urbain II, born here in 1042 and who launched the first crusade in 1095, marks the spot. Châtillon-sur-Marne first had a fortress on its heights in Roman times, then a fortified castle dating from the first half of the 10th century. A village rich in history, Châtillon-sur-Marne is a great place to stroll and discover its monuments and beautiful panoramic views over the valley. Take a detour 1 kilometer down the road to discover the 11th-century Binson priory. The adjoining cemetery contains the remains of 2,671 French soldiers from the First World War.
