During the Second World War, among the martyred communes of the Dordogne, Rouffignac is one of the most damaged, since it was almost entirely destroyed by the elements of the Brehme Division. Rouffignac was looted, then burned and was to be for France the image of the Nazi barbarism. Only the church and three neighbouring houses were spared. The martyrdom of Rouffignac was made official on 5 March 1945 by the visit of General de Gaulle. The church has kept its magnificent Renaissance portal (1530) with Corinthian capitals. In an essentially Romanesque Périgord, its Renaissance splendour is all the more precious
