At the gateway to the Dordogne, this small village of fishermen, craftsmen and traders in the water, vine and wine trades, became the commune of Port-Sainte-Foy with the merger of Canet, Tizac and Rouquette, and more recently, Port-Sainte-Foy-et-Ponchapt with Ponchapt in 1960. It reached its peak at the time of the inland navigation on the Dordogne, an intense marine life that animated the quays and shops along the "Rivière-espérance". Oak and chestnut wood from the high country, wines bound for the ocean... and, from there, to the distant countries of Great Britain and Holland. Winegrowing remains the main activity today. The reds benefit from the Bergerac AOC appellation and the whites from the Montravel and Côtes-de-Montravel appellations. To relive this rich past, you can visit the boat museum, but also walk along the quays and along the towpath.
