With its 6,440 m² garden, the tower was once a temple dedicated to the protective goddess of water, Vesunna. Over 24 meters high.
Vesunna became the capital of the city of Petrocores around 16 BC. At that time it was a matter of learning to live "Roman-style", adopting architecture and lifestyle. This is how the Tower of Vesuvius was built, a temple dedicated to the goddess who protected the water, and then at her feet the houses of nobles, which have now disappeared. Created in the 19th century, the garden of Vesuvius with a surface area of 6,440 m² is organized on this major Gallo-Roman site, around the ancient remains of the Tower of Vesuvius. From now on, visitors will finally be able to get as close as possible and enter the temple. A metal footbridge covered with wood of about twenty meters is installed. Integrated into the landscape, it will allow access to the greatest number of people, without the risk of damaging the site. Above all, it will have no impact on the construction itself since it can be completely dismantled. This footbridge nevertheless gives the visitor an exceptional view of the heart of this cylindrical tower with its special acoustics. Panels rich in information mark out the visit. This recent development completes the Gallo-Roman route that every visitor to the city must complete, so as not to miss the Roman soul of the place: the Vesunna Museum, the Tower of Vesuña, the Arena Garden, the Roman street with the Porte de Mars, and the remains that are currently being excavated near the church of Saint-Etienne de la Cité, under the convent of Sainte-Marthe.
