Nontron is rightly nicknamed the capital of the Périgord Vert region. Its old houses and ramparts are the last vestiges of a medieval fortress that was severely damaged by the Wars of Religion and the French Revolution. First a Celtic settlement, then a Roman one, the town occupies a promontory overlooking the Bandia Gorge. It is said that Richard the Lionheart, wounded during the siege of Nontron, died in Châlus. A visit to the Nontron cutlery factory is a must for young and old alike. The company has been in existence since 1653, and boasts centuries of experience in the manufacture of traditional knives.
