Nearly 1,400 inhabitants live in this charming, traditional village where life is good. The village of Signy-l'Abbaye is gentle and peaceful. It's also a large bowl of greenery, with pronounced valleys that will win over walkers. The center of the village, marked by its timber-framed covered market, houses the town hall on its first floor. The Moulin de Librecy with its flower-filled wash-house, a discreet hideaway behind the church, is also well worth a visit. At the heart of the Thiérache fortified church circuit, come and discover the large state forest and its Héronnière ponds, from which the mountain bike circuits start. It's a 3,525-hectare haven of peace, where unspoilt nature is still the undisputed queen. The Chêne Perché site and its hut (the highest in France) are also well worth a visit. Unfortunately, nothing remains of the abbey's rich monastic past. Founded in 1135 by monks from Igny, the abbey of Notre-Dame de Signy was sold as national property, then completely dismantled for use as a quarry after the French Revolution. In the 19th century, its ruins were filled in to serve as a platform for industrial development and the railway line. Its library once contained almost 4,000 volumes, of which only 300 have survived, now held by the Charleville-Mézières municipal library and the Bibliothèque nationale.
