It was at Rocroi, on May 19, 1643, that the French, led by the young Duc d'Enghien, Louis II de Bourbon, won a resounding victory over Spanish troops. This battle was decisive in the Thirty Years' War, as it brought France back to the forefront of the international stage. In 1889, following advances in artillery technology, the Rocroi stronghold was decommissioned. A unique site in France for its star-spangled town planning, it's a must for history buffs and lovers of authenticity alike. Don't forget to visit the highly instructive museum of the Battle of Rocroi and the Thirty Years' War.
