Shale has been quarried in the region for eight centuries. Discover the narrow streets of the old town, with its staircases and Spanish houses built four centuries ago along the quays. Here, people chat on doorsteps, as they stroll along the banks of the Meuse, the sun glinting off the horizon. It's a long way from the days when slate quarries were the lifeblood of Fumay. And yet, for centuries, Fumay's inhabitants worked hard to make the town the city of slate, as evidenced by the "verdeaux", the hills made from the waste of past slate quarrying, the stained glass windows in the church of Saint-Georges and the chapel of Sainte-Barbe.
