Here, you'll have a rendezvous with French history. As the first frontier town in the kingdom of France, it served as a refuge for many Liège immigrants driven out by the wars. It welcomed an active, skilled population, and became a center of craftsmanship, with three main activities: drapery, leatherworking and metalworking. In 1521, Charles V invaded the kingdom. His army was stopped at Mézières by Bayard, who defended the town and repelled the attackers. From then on, Mézières was considered a strategic military location, and fortifications flourished, leading to the disappearance of several districts and driving the inhabitants back to Charleville.
