Saint-Viâtre was originally called Trembley, in memory of the deadly malaria epidemic that struck the village a long time ago. Later, the small village paid tribute to a hermit passing through in the 6th century, then called a "viâtre", who stayed in the woods. Saint-Viâtre was born. Named after him, the church contains his tomb and offers interesting details such as an early 16th century polyptych by the Flemish school depicting the Passion of Christ and the life of Saint Viâtre. The greenery and the lakes in the village are ideal for walks or bike rides.
