Cave discovered in 1924 with galleries with stalactites, stalagmites and rare crystallizations, night visit proposed

In this cliff on the Vézère, the Grand Roc cave was discovered in 1924 by Jean Maury, then fitted out and opened to the public in 1927. It offers only guided tours of about 40 minutes during which you will discover not less than 1 000 m² of crystallizations: beware your eyes! The main room, with a low ceiling, from which three small galleries start, is full of stalactites and stalagmites, of many colors due to the different mineral particles, but especially of rare crystallizations such as pendulums, fistulas, gours, calcite triangles, draperies and eccentrics resembling corals: a real jewel of nature for a real trip in the history of the earth, with a view on the valley of Vézère as a bonus at the exit. Here, you will be dazzled both inside the cave and outside!

Not to be missed: a presentation of the Laugerie Basse shelters, and the night visit of the cave with the storm lamp during the summer, every Monday and Tuesday. These night visits are recommended for children over 8 years old. After such emotions, the restaurant offers a troglodyte menu.

And you should know that the Grotte du Grand Roc is internationally renowned, and that it is one of the fifteen prehistoric sites and decorated caves of the Vézère valley, and the only cave with concretions listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1979: nothing less! That's how much this place is a must-see during your trip in the Périgord Noir.

A very interesting visit accompanied by a guide who brings many information! I learned a lot from things! However, the visit is too fast with my taste and the latter was very disturbed by the cries tears and children… To see all the same!

Grotte magnifique à découvrir; excentriques concrétions (comme "la victoire de Samothrace !?), jolie mise en couleurs et explications de qualité lors de la visite guidée
