This small town owes its name to Humbault le Tortu, lord of Vierzon, who in 980, built on the site of a Gallic "motte", then Roman castrum, one of the most powerful fortresses in Sologne. Thus, for three centuries, La Ferté-Imbault was under the protection of the castle which, destroyed during the Hundred Years War, was reborn from its ruins in the 16th century under the initiative of Jacques d'Estampes, Marshal of France. You can still admire this Sologne brick building. In the village, you can admire the priory of the 18th century and the chapel of Saint-Taurin, a remnant of the collegiate church which has now disappeared.
