The ruins of the imposing castle built in the 11th century are a reminder that the region was at the heart of the struggles between the English and French rulers. The most famous battle is of course the one fought here in 1194 between King Philip Augustus and his enemy, Richard the Lionhearted. The swift, lighter and more mobile English troops surprised the French knights and the heavy convoy of wagons in which the French king was carrying his treasures and archives proving his royal status. Philip Augustus was defeated and had to flee, losing all his assets. You can also see the Tour de Griset, remains of a temple that attests to the Gallo-Roman past
