Blois' development has benefited from its geographical position: close to the capital, in the center of France, on the banks of its largest river, on a vital connecting axis. Although its Gallo-Roman origins are unquestionable, it wasn't until the 9th century and the Carolingians that traces of a fortress were found, indicating the town's importance. History really began to take shape with Joan of Arc, who was about to deliver Orléans and made it her headquarters before the attack. It became royal with Louis XII and his wife Anne de Bretagne. The monarch made the château his residence, which François I enlarged and strengthened.
