Wedged between rock and river, this former episcopal city is listed as one of France's most beautiful villages. With its medieval troglodyte fort, which takes advantage of the natural defence offered by the golden cliff, the remains of its castle, its ancient streets and the tropical garden created in the 1950s, La Roque-Gageac is one of the valley's must-see sites. In the past, its port was very active, particularly for merchants from Sarlat, who shipped their products on gabares to Bordeaux. Today, these flat-bottomed boats are a delight for visitors, who take them on guided tours.
