The Loing, the Puiseaux, the Vernisson and the Briare canal were all waterways that enabled Montargis to develop economically throughout the 19th century, thanks to its fishing and tanning industries. The Musée des Beaux-Arts Girodet, the Parc Durzy with its rare trees and its famous statue of the Dog of Montargis are now a must-see in the center of town. And let's not forget the pralines de Mazet and crottes du chien (a confection inspired by a medieval legend, a hazelnut praline surrounded by nougatine and coated in dark chocolate), which can be enjoyed all along the Briare canal, which has been planted with plane trees for over two centuries.
