Situated on the Greenwich meridian crossing and at the crossroads of four departments, La Roche-Chalais is equidistant from Bordeaux, Angoulême and Périgueux (70 km as the crow flies). Louis XIII is said to have stayed at the Château de Montluc, which was dismantled in the 19th century. You have to settle down on the church square to enjoy the view of the Dronne valley from the terraces. The church has a neo-gothic buffet which, like the interior decoration of the church, illustrates the aesthetic taste in vogue at the end of the 19th century. The surroundings, especially Echourgnac with its peaceful abbey and Trappist cheese, are not lacking in interest
