With its church of Saint-Hippolyte, rebuilt in 1860, whose perfect symmetry seems like a fighter plane in the air, and its membership of the national nature reserve of Saint-Mesmin, Mareau-aux-Prés, a small commune that tapers off at the edge of the departmental road and snakes along the Loire, remains a symbol of the French village with an agricultural vocation, made up of villages scattered over its territory. History has left few visible traces here, with a section of wall of a medieval castle that has completely disappeared and the remains of the stables where Louis XI used to take his horse back to his estate in Cléry after crossing the Loire.
