The territory of the commune of Lailly-en-Val has been occupied by men since prehistoric times. Its location between the Loire and the forest must have already offered advantages appreciated by the first occupants of the region. The evidence that has been found shows that people have settled continuously in this area. The traces left behind bring to life various eras and civilizations, notably the Gallo-Romans and the Middle Ages. François I had a hunting lodge here and the writer Eugène Sue stayed here. The density of castles, many of which have now disappeared, on its territory shows its past importance
