Petit Futé's opinion on CHÂTEAU-MUSÉE DE GIEN - HUNTING, HISTORY AND NATURE

Plate millesim 2022

The castle, which today houses the Museum of Hunting and Nature, overlooks the town of Liège. It is located on the border of several historical territories. It was built by the daughter of Louis XI: Anne of France became Anne de Beaujeu. Its architecture is a testimony of the transition period between the medieval defensive fortress and the Renaissance with its greater comfort and pleasure of living. After having seen Joan of Arc and Catherine de Medici pass through, it became national property during the Revolution and belonged to the Loiret department, which installed the sub-prefecture, the court and a prison there. The Hunting Museum, created on the initiative of Pierre-Louis Duchartre (inspector of French museums) and Henri de Linarès (first curator), has been housed within its walls since 1952. A major renovation project has made it possible to showcase remarkable collections on the themes of hunting techniques. One can discover the fauna of the region through the different facets of hunting. The remarkable collections on the techniques of hunting by flying, hounding and shooting provide information that shows the importance of this ancestral practice in the heart of the Loire Valley to the uninitiated, but also to the hunters themselves. In addition to the museum, there is no shortage of activities for young and old alike: creative wolf mask workshops, ice sculptures in winter, concerts in summer... Not forgetting the guided tours.
