Formerly Saint-Germain-des-Prés-de-Candes, this village on the banks of the Vienne River is located in the heart of the Loire Anjou Touraine Regional Nature Park and on the borders of Touraine, on the edge of the Angevin and Poitevin lands. The RD 751 linking Chinon to Saumur runs through the town. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 and then in 2021 for the Confluence of the Vienne and the Loire, it is home to both a remarkable natural heritage, rich in wetlands housing many species of orchids, and an exceptional built heritage with a church classified as a historical monument, castles, a windmill, a calvary, a manor house or the school of St. Germain designed by Lucien Kroll The houses built in tufa stone are located on the hillside along the Vienne river and along three valleys: the Vallée des Grottes, the Vallée des Vaux and the Vallée de la Gaudrée. A few troglodytic dwellings also dot this preserved rural territory where the last builders of traditional hutted towers can be found. Hiking trails and the possibility of kayaking are part of the tourist attraction of Saint-Germain-sur-Vienne The history of this village of Roman origin is marked by the boat industry, the exploitation of the vineyard but also by the proximity of the military camp of Fontevraud, maneuvering camp of the military schools of Saumur
