Descartes is one of the oldest cities of the department. Man settled in the valley of the Creuse tourangelle more than 500 000 years ago. Numerous vestiges testify to this past and in particular to the Gallo-Roman period. It is therefore not surprising that its castle was one of the first to be built in stone. Today, only a few traces remain. It is René Descartes who will make its fame. The philosopher was born in 1596 in this city which was still called La Haye-en-Touraine and which was renamed in 1967. Known as the "city of the three Renés", Descartes was also the birthplace of two other great writers: René Boylesve and René de Buxeuil.
