This village in the Cher valley has become famous for the charm of its château, which is the most visited in France, but perhaps less well known is the unexpected former gatehouse, the only one built in Gothic style at the château's request. The town's history is intimately linked to the building, starting with its name! The difference lies in the final "x". Legend has it that during the French Revolution, Madame Dupin, who was close to the villagers, decided to remove the final letter to distance herself from the symbol of royalty it represented. Chenonceaux also boasts a 12th- and 16th-century church.
