Excideuil was built around the 10th century castle which remains anchored to its rocky peak. It had to repel the assaults of Richard the Lionheart and the tumults of the Wars of Religion, before falling into abandonment in the 16th century. You can stroll through the medieval streets to discover the house of Marshal Bugeaud, the convents of Saint-Claire and Cordeliers, the Commanderie Saint-Antoine. The church is a former Benedictine priory which has preserved from its Romanesque origins of the 12th century only a fragment of the portal in the facade, and is topped by a strange bell tower, rebuilt in concrete in the 1930s after a fire...
