Of course, La Châtre is easily identified with the novels of George Sand, the emblematic figure of this town with a history as rich as the author's work. Situated on a hillside overlooking the Noire valley, La Châtre grew out of a Roman or Gallic camp, depending on the version. In any case, this is what earned it its name, which comes from castra. Well enclosed and well walled, the town retains many traces of its medieval past, including superb half-timbered houses, the Chauvigny tower and the Carmes convent. It's a very pleasant place to stay in Berry, so take your time and visit!
