Drachenbronn is probably one of the villages most affected by the war. Already in 1870 the inhabitants had been requisitioned to supply the horses of Captain Zeppelin's German troops (from the balloon) and carry the dead from the nearby battlefield. But it is the Maginot Line and its Hochwald Fortress that is the most visible nowadays: capable of sheltering 1,200 men, entirely dug in the mountains, the most powerful in Alsace with its 11 active blocks, turrets, artillery casemates, 3 "entrance" blocks and its network of galleries linking these different elements which extends over 7 kilometres.
