Leaning against a hillside, Epernon overlooks the valley of the Drouette, a tributary of the Eure. The town was once renowned for its sandstone quarries, which provided much of the material for the construction of Louis XIV's aqueduct. Today, this stone is still found in many homes, with its characteristic color. In the 20th century, millstone production was very high. Epernon was joined by other localities, and together they produced up to 4 million millstones, which were shipped all over the world. A stroll through the trees reveals traces of the old quarries.
