The Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region is so vast that it was one of the few regions not to be modified in 2015. And a tourist guide on the PACA region, as it is often called, will hardly be able to tour it. From Menton the Camargue, Marseille to Barcelonnette, viaAvignon,Arles, Aix-en-Provence, Nicethe French Riviera and the Alpilles, the region is a large sunny landscape where inhabitants, traditions and historical past have left their mark forever. Faithful to their culture and despite the passage of time, each region and each city has remained proud of its terroir, its nature and its local customs. The richness of the colours, the softness of the landscapes and the benevolence of the climate give the PACA region a charm and an aura to which travellers and visitors have always been sensitive. There is one thing more to this region than anywhere else, especially in summer, when the unparalleled scents of lavender, thyme and rosemary and the singing of cicadas are a call to tranquility and happiness in life. Between alpine mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, the region is diverse. There are charming little villages and huge towns that seduce with the bubbling and lively rhythm of Mediterranean cities.
Enjoy the festivities in Provence which testify to the attachment of the Provençal people for their traditions, enjoy its renowned gastronomy and be amazed by the local wines which have given the region its letters of nobility. A paradise so vast that a lifetime would not be enough to discover!
When to go to Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur? The region is so vast and varied that we would be tempted to answer: all year round!
As far as nature is concerned, all outdoor sports are practiced, all year round or almost. But the most pleasant months are June, July, August and September. This is also the high tourist season. The numerous water spots (beaches, lakes, rivers) allow for swimming, water sports and fishing. In winter, when the snow is there, the winter sports resorts of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence come alive. In the four seasons, the weekly markets of the towns and villages offer local products.
Numerous festivals and cultural events punctuate the year, particularly in the summer.
The cities of the PACA region can be visited all year round, but each one has its own unique atmosphere during a particular and famous event (Avignon festival, Cannes festival, Chorégies d'Orange...). Unless you go there specifically for this event, it is better to avoid the city during this period: it will be difficult to find accommodation at a decent price.
Note that in summer, prices rise quickly and high: the region being one of the most touristic in France, it is very popular with French and foreign visitors.
The PACA region, due to its large size, benefits from a Mediterranean climate on the coast and inland, and a mountain climate in its alpine part. With more than 300 days of sunshine, the region is one of the sunniest in France. Rainfall, like temperatures, varies a lot and the further inland and towards the Alps, the lower the average temperatures. Finally, a good part of the region is subject to the mistral wind.
