Hiking

1 review

This short walk takes you to the discovery of the emblematic monuments of the city of Saintes. To get in the bath immediately, start your journey by the arenas. Dating back to the year 40 after Jesus Christ, this Gallo-Roman amphitheatre is the best preserved of the Atlantic coast, perhaps even Europe. At the time, it could accommodate up to 15 000 spectators! Then go to the Romanesque church of Saint-Europe, before you head to the Emperor's house, where you expect a magnificent view of the city and its river.

Walking tour in the marshes of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Prée

Hiking

A simple itinerary and a very flat route: This is what the grass walkers like, especially as the walk is adorned with the pleasant spectacle of herons, which you will see very closely. At the start of the Saint-Laurent-de-la-Prée car park, hire yourself on the big straight line of the lifting of the Reverseaux. You will follow it until its end, before turning right on a path along the edge of the Charente. You see the ferry bridge of Rochefort. At the end, turn right again: The asphalt road will take you first to Lower Roche and then to High Roche, before you get back to your starting point.

THE TALKING PATH

This is what we call here the "Way that speaks". In order to add an instructive dimension to your outdoor walk, the Community of Communes Portes de la Creuse en Marche has come up with this original idea: to make you discover the life of the old-time Creuse washers, with a helmet on your ears. As you go along, follow the Petit Battoir and listen to the explanations of the places you encounter. A way to make you visit at your own pace the cultural heritage of the village and its surroundings!

Rate: free, on presentation of an identity document and signature of a loan agreement

Duration: variable; 30 minutes of audio recording.

Difficulty: medium.

Beaconing: Small Beater.

The talking path can be downloaded from www.portesdelacreuseenmarche.fr. There are also topo-guides which are distributed free of charge in all the town halls of the communities of communes.

Circuit Arfeuille on foot from Royère-de-Vassivière

Hiking

Rendezvous at Place Pierre-Ferrand for this short hike to discover the hamlet of Arfeuille. Before leaving, you can, if you wish, obtain the topo-guide of the itinerary (1 €) from the Tourist Office of Vassivière. Otherwise, rely on the yellow markings that accompany you. The route is easy and takes you to the pond via peat bogs. By the way, do you know where the names Arfeuille and Royère de Vassivière come from? If the first would most probably come from the Latin acrifolium (meaning "holly"), the appellation of Royère de Vassivière would come from the Latin robre ("rouvre") and vaciver ("pasture"). Both refer to the major clearing works undertaken between the 11th and 12th centuries: the forest massifs then became arable land, on which the two localities are located today.

Rate: free of charge.

Distance: 4.5 km.

Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes.

Difficulty: fairly easy.

Markings: yellow.
