The Greater Paris Metropolis is an inter-municipal body comprising the city of Paris, 123 municipalities in the three departments of Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-de-Marne and 7 municipalities in Essonne and Val d'Oise. One of the objectives of the Metropolis is to facilitate travel by bicycle, particularly between Paris and its inner suburbs. To this end, the Greater Paris Bicycle Plan provides for the investment of 10 million euros per year to define, among other things, a structuring bicycle network on a metropolitan scale, to complement the RER V networks, and also to implement accompanying measures such as participation in actions linked to "bike schools" as well as the setting up of structures offering learning sessions for first-time learners. The Greater Paris Bicycle Plan represents 200 km of bicycle routes in 65 municipalities, i.e. almost half of the municipalities in the Metropolis, and the objectives are clear: to protect health by cycling, to improve air quality and to strengthen the attractiveness of the municipalities.
