Traditional Festival Folklore and Fair
3/5
1 review

The Kann Al Loar festival is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to discover the vitality of Breton culture in Landerneau. Since 1987, artists from all horizons have been performing to bring Brittany to life through music, song, theater and dance. Far from clichés, the festival promotes both traditional and modern forms of artistic expression. Kann Al Loar, with its street arts, shows and varied musical program, offers a formidable cultural mix for a weekend rich in discoveries.

BRADERIE DU CANAL SAINT-MARTIN

Fair
2.5/5
2 reviews

September weekends are great for strolling and bargain hunting! In Rennes, the biggest braderie is the one on the Canal Saint Martin, where you can lose yourself in the local streets or stroll along the banks filled with people and vendors. The "Foire aux objets insolites" is launched at this flagship event of the Rennes year. It's true that this is France's second-largest braderie, after Lille's, and it's a source of great pride in the Breton capital. Organized for the first time in 1968, this annual garage sale attracts over 200,000 bargain hunters along the Canal Saint-Martin, in search of a rare object, a golden bargain, a toy for the kids, or simply a stroll along the canal. The stallholders offer surprises and items from their attics, some of which are highly unusual, others totally surprising. Although the Braderie du Canal is an institution in the Rennes town square, it has lost some of its lustre over the years: for security reasons, the perimeter has tended to shrink. But it's still a must for shopping, strolling, drinking, seeing friends, eating and having fun. The people of Rennes love this long day in September, which sounds like a reminder of the vacations and whispers in their ears the imperative need to take time out and indulge themselves at very reasonable prices.

GOUEL SANT LOUP - GWENGAMP/FESTIVAL DE LA SAINT-LOUP - GUINGAMP

Dance Event
2/5
1 review

Undoubtedly the festival of Saint-Loup is the oldest feast of Brittany, indeed its origins date back to 1850. Today it is deployed to the sound of bombardes and binious ou or kozh during the second half of August. Since 1957, it has become the indispensable meeting of the Breton dance. Each year under the aegis of Kendalc'h, an organization bringing together Celtic circles, is the national competition of the Breton dance. On six days dancers, musicians and not least, find themselves between the Vally and the Place du Centre for a hot dérobée. As for the excellent Jean-Pierre Ellien, one year on the other for a number of decades, he remains the main player and masterpiece of this festival.

TRAVELLING - RENNES

Cinema Event

20 years! Travelling has reached adulthood: a longevity and a success (almost 45 000 entries for previous editions) that would not have dared to imagine Hussam Hindi and Eric Gouzannet, co-founders of the festival and the association organizing it, Clair Arcane, the main actor of the reindeer rennes. Each winter, in January-February, the festival invests the film theatres in Rennes and its periphery around a theme - unique: the city. The 20-year special edition was devoted to Jerusalem (with Israeli and Palestinian films), but also to Dublin, New York, Helsinki, Buenos Aires, Algiers, Cairo, Tokyo. Students and film fans invest rooms that are always full, to discover filmmakers, safe or classic values of film heritage. If a festival dedicated to the city of Martin Scorsese or Japanese cinema, one of the best in the world, seems to be obvious, cities less known for their cinema culture book excellent surprises, and that's the great wealth of Travelling.

FESTIVAL DU FILM BRITANNIQUE

Cinema Event

With half a dozen films in competition and a wide selection of shorts and features, this 30-year-old festival is a testament to the vitality of British independent cinema. The event in Dunkirk has launched the careers of "small films" in France that nobody would have bet a kopeck on, such as Billy Elliott or The Full Monty. Its small size allows it to remain a friendly place of exchange, where one can easily discuss with the artists present.

FESTIVAL PERISCOPAGE - RENNES

Literary Event

The independent and alternative comic that has seen the last decade the flowering of artists like Marjane Satrapi or Johan Sfar has always been on the stern, so styles and techniques evolve. Born in today's missing magazines like Hara-Kiri, A Follow or still Screaming Screaming, the publishers'relay in small structure holds the torch high. This festival, which will celebrate its eight years in June, offers discoveries and signatures in an imperial bus plying the city and stops on the city squares, in independent bookstores or in the specialized rooms of the Free Fields. Also unusual landmarks such as unusual facades or the Orangerie of the Thabor Park are all discoveries of the city and new trends in the comic book of the 2000 s.

GOUELIOU MEUR KERNE - KEMPER/FESTIVAL DE CORNOUAILLE

Musical event

One of the oldest events in Brittany, since it was created in 1923 by Louis Le Bourhis. In a rather different tone from Lorient, the more family-friendly Cornwall festival plays on the register of «popular arts and traditions», combining with certain happiness, Breton identity and world music. The brothers Morvan dining with Johnny Clegg, and the master Tambour of Senegal Doudou Rose giving the tempo to men Men ha Tan, or Denez Prigent mixing the gwerz with improvised music, rock or hip-hop. This festival was christened the "Grand Fêtes of Cornwall Queens" in 1923, before becoming "Cornwall Holidays" in 1947 and giving birth to the current formula in 1982. Every year between the 3rd and the 4 th Sunday in July, the festival offers nearly 200 performances, with an animation every half hour from 11 am to 2 am. It brings together 3 000 artists and hosts 300 000 festival goers. All the shows are given in the city centre, on Saint-Corentin square, in other words the cathedral of the cathedral, the gardens of the diocese which are just steps away and the Resistance square near the edge of the Odet.

GOUEL AN ERER KOZH - KARAEZ/FESTIVAL « LES VIEILLES CHARRUES »

Musical event

A lord all honour, Gouel year Erer Kozh, more known in the Hexagon and Europe under his French name of festival of Old Ploughs. Eighteen years of history, eighteen years of success, originally an idea of three friends. A joke almost, to freelance it in some way to the summer and coastal feasts that each year honour, who is singing sailors, who are old hulls, which are old rigging… hence its name'Old Ploughs '. Nonsense of students in a way and a common will of a small group of individuals to refuse the slow death that seemed to be attributed to Kreiz Breizh, this centre Brittany poor in a region that is vocation, post-natal, tourist and seaside. And now? It is 5 000 volunteers who invest every year in these three crazy days of the Poher, plus the evening of Thursday, who see the carhaisienne population of 8 000 souls welcome the time of the festival, basically the city of Brest, becoming the space of a weekend capital of the world rock fmusic! With an appointment not especially missed, for this 18 th edition Old Ploughs welcome "Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band", exceptional concert on Thursday July 16 th. Also the American pop-rock group "The Killers" as well as "Fiction Plan" and its leader who is no other than Sting's son, a high-flying programming. ETONNANTS VOYAGEURS

Literary Event

Book shows are everywhere or almost everywhere… and in Saint-Malo as elsewhere; However, the one holding open in the privateer city displays its difference. For many years, these "The Voyageurs" have laid a flat bag in the Solidor tower. It was Capt'groin Michel Le Bris that had this bright idea to anchor, here in the city of Jacques Cartier, a sacred traveler that one. It is indeed possible for him to have given the idea of this naming name "The Voyageurs"! Brittany, everyone knows… we will now know, is the first region… after Paris for music publishing; the same applies, admittedly, to publishers of literary and paradigm works for the number of books published every year. The «The Voyageurs» lounge comes every year, as a staging point, to mark the cultural dynamism of the region. This festival has been declared, since its creation, as the rendezvous for all lovers of literature. Over the past 20 years, more than guests have been invited from over countries, all kinds of literature that have come out of their fringants galleons to meet an enlightened amateur audience. This is how we live Jim Harrison, Russel Bank, Hugo Pratt, James Welch, Alvaro Mutis or JMG The Clézio debate with their readers. The real project is that to bring a certain idea of literature abroad, making Saint-Malo the pole of a vast network whose ramifications span the world. And this is how the festival "The Voyageurs" gave birth to other "European Book Meetings" in Bamako, Mali, Haiti… In Saint-Malo during that time, every year, a country, a state, a region of the world is in honour.

LES TOMBEES DE LA NUIT - RENNES

Festival and cultural event

This festival once again uncategorized, involving music, theatre, visual arts, circus, street shows, up every early July the life of the centre of Rennes and makes it an artistic playground, playful, multifaceted. Almost everywhere, Les Chutes de at night continue to strive to be a popular event with a strong artistic demand. You must see the surrealist bands walking through the streets of Rennes, or contemporary dance shows, played on the background music background, in the afternoon, place de la Mairie, front of onlookers both médusés and shaken, to understand that the art of the living eclipsing the urban space with a resounding success. Whether they are free or pay, the shows always book excellent surprises, troops unknown to the big names (Yann Tiersen, Pascal Comelade, Royal de Luxe). The 2008 edition, which was a great success, amazed us with a compendium of a Belgian theater scene in full boiling, or dénichant a group of Navajo Indians playing a drum punk influenced by… the Ramones! In short, a festival that makes the city live in its way, and offers surprises at every moment, and every corner of the street.

QUARTIERS D'ÉTÉ

Musical event

The Summer Festival Festival is a youth festival, designed by young people who are offered to those on Rennes in the heart of the summer. A good opportunity to be festive while delivering a popular education event. In fact, this eco-citizen festival offers citizen lectures, world music, writing workshops, dance workshops, drawings, cinema to the beautiful star and even grafts. This time dedicated to 15-25 years is also sailing between urban cultures, rap, reggae, soul and bold trends. During two evenings and during the days, young people can enjoy the originality of the demonstrations in the Gayeulles park. This festival, which 'gives sound and meaning', celebrates its 25 years in 2018. A longevity due to the quality of this fantastic event, a citizen, festive, unifying and fighting against discrimination. It detaches itself from all the other festivals by its free, since its primary mission is to facilitate access to culture for young people in neighborhoods and families who cannot go on holiday. During the day, the program revolves around sports, wellness and cultural activities by a group of artists. In the evening, local groups and poster heads (Rim 'k and Soom T in 2017, Zebda in 2012) share the big scene in a mix of genres (hip-hop, rap and world music). Finally, this festival is eco-friendly and solidarity, with information booths. Contact the Crij to volunteer. For activities, on-site registration.
