Budget & Tips
Get your thighs ready: in Suriname, budget-friendly activities revolve around a wide range of sporting activities. First and foremost, a bike ride is a great way to discover the capital in all its glory! But it's the forest excursions that offer a unique experience to discover the lush nature and incredible biodiversity of the Amazon. Although you'll almost always need an experienced guide to guide you safely through the lush jungle, a few small trails are sometimes marked out (especially from certain resorts). But above all, local guides can help you spot animals and learn more about their behavior and natural habitat. They can also take you to explore impressive natural sites such as waterfalls, caves, rapids and other fascinating geological formations.
If you're motorized, visits to small villages will allow you to meet the locals, learn more about their traditional way of life and discover their unique culture and traditions.
Finally, if you'd like to cool off, we recommend spending the day (or afternoon) at a resort on one of the beautiful sandy beaches along the Suriname River: for just a few US$ to enter the resort or have a drink (depending on the establishment), you can take advantage of some sports facilities (beach volleyball or soccer) and, above all, swim in complete safety.
What's very local
At the risk of repeating ourselves, discovering the forest is the most local activity to do in this country, because access to the Amazon is so easy, and it's a unique place in the world. And don't forget to take a pirogue ride: it's a very local way of getting around the rivers.
Your documents please
In Suriname, as in most places, you'll need a license to fish legally. But for an amateur experience, there are many excursions available to try your hand at sport fishing, and local fishing guides can often help you comply with regulations and ensure an enjoyable, environmentally-friendly fishing experience.
