MAIASMOKK

Specialized coffee shop
4/5
1 review

Dating back to 1864, this is Tallinn's oldest café, which has never moved since its creation. Created by German-born pastry chef Georg Stude, the place became famous for its marzipan pastries. You'll also find homemade cakes and quiches. Today, the café belongs to Orkla, which owns the largest chocolate producer in Estonia , Kalev , which explains its impressive variety of chocolates. An ideal place for a gourmet break, but also for taking home delicious chocolates and other sweets as souvenirs.

MARCHÉS DE TARTU

Market

Markets are the lifeblood of destinations, and a visit to the Tartu market, just a stone's throw from the river, reveals that the locals love dill (the smell of the herb wafts through the air almost constantly) and that they love to garden, especially in their kitchen gardens (there are plenty of stalls selling seedlings). As for the halls, they house products requiring a cold chain, such as meat and fish. There are also food counters, perfect for a bite to eat. The entrance is marked by the statue of a huge pig.

ANNELI VIIK

Chocolatier

After years in the old town, Anneli Viik has moved her store and café to the steps of Balti Jaam. It was in Belgium that Anneli came to learn the best techniques for working chocolates and making pralines, so it's fair to say that the standard is pretty high. You'll find all the flavors we love in northern countries (orange, cinnamon, marzipan), but the chocolatière's passion is pralines flavored with alcohol: rum, whisky, orange liqueur, pepper vodka... Her chocolates are little jewels.

RØST

Bakery

It's in the remains of the old Rotermanni flour mill that this bakery-café has set up shop, a location that couldn't be more appropriate. Here, the essentials of the Scandinavian coffee house are respected: clean design, wooden tables, high window tables, quality coffee and good breads, pastries and other sweets like cardamom brioches or cinnamon rolls, but also gougères, savoury tarts... We dare you not to go in when you smell the delicious aromas as you walk past.

BRASSERIE PÕHJALA

Craft brewery and microbrewery

One of the first arrivals in the new Noblessner district is Pohjala, Estonia's best-known microbrewery. This former industrial building was the perfect location for the project: below, beer production and a reception area for guided tours, and above, a taproom with some twenty beers (from the brewery's own production or invited guests) on draught and a restaurant offering quality American-style pub food. The room is huge, and some tables overlook the beer vats. There's even a beer sauna. Worth a try!
