Granada is one of Nicaragua's most beautiful cities. Founded in 1524, it is the country's oldest Spanish colony. Its strategic location made it an active port during the period of the slave trade. Over the centuries, Granada has been the scene of many battles and has been burnt down on several occasions. However, the town has been carefully rebuilt and restored to become a popular tourist destination. At the heart of the city is the Parque Central, surrounded by important churches, museums and beautifully restored colonial houses. Sites of interest include the San Francisco church, once part of a convent and now home to a cultural center with a museum and library. The town is also renowned for its pre-Columbian art and Nicaraguan folk painting. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of nearby Lake Nicaragua and the Mombacho volcano. Granada is a city rich in history and culture, offering visitors a unique experience.
