The Channel Islands, close to France, offer a complete change of scenery while retaining a familiar atmosphere. Jersey, the largest of the islands, offers numerous hiking trails along its cliffs, through its flower-filled countryside and up to the fortifications and dolmens that bear witness to its history. Alderney, less touristy, is easily accessible thanks to its airport. Sercq and Herm seem frozen in time, with Sercq governed by a seigneur and where motor vehicles are prohibited. The Channel Islands are a true haven of peace, ideal for escaping the hustle and bustle of the modern world.

Hauteville House in Guernsey, the home of Victor Hugo's exile, is well worth a visit. Visits to this historic house are only possible with a guide, so booking in advance is essential. Admission is £12 for the full rate and £10 for the reduced rate, which applies to students, large families, teachers and the unemployed. Admission is free for under-18s, disabled visitors and their carers, City of Paris staff and ICOM card holders. Guided tours are limited to a maximum of 10 people, and booking is compulsory. It is advisable to arrive at least one hour before the start of the tour to purchase your ticket. Payment is in pounds sterling only. To get to Guernsey, you can take a ferry with Condor Ferries or Manche Iles Express, or fly with Alderney Air Services or Blue Islands.
