From the airport to the city centre Maldives

Velana International Airport is located on the island of Hulhule, just opposite the island of Malé. The two islands are now connected by a bridge and it is possible to take a taxi to the capital from the airport. The fare is 60 MVR. It is also possible to make the connection by boat, much less numerous since the construction of the bridge. The crossing costs 10 MVR. Finally, most tourists go directly to the island-hotel they have booked and do not go through the capital. The resorts' reception agents wait for their clients in the arrivals hall, either with a sign with their name on it or at the designated counter in the arrivals hall. The agent will take you to the boat, plane or seaplane used for the transfer.

Arrival by train Maldives

There is no railway line in the Maldives. You will not be able to get there by train or travel by train in the country.

Arrival by boat Maldives

There are two ferry ports on the island of Male. The first is called the Hulhumale Ferry Terminal and is where most ferries to the local islands depart from. It is located in the northeast of the island. The second is the Villingili Ferry Terminal and is located in the southwest of the island. It serves Villingili and some local islands.

Public transport Maldives

If there are some bus lines connecting Hulhumale to Malé, you should have no reason to use it. However, you should know that there is a shuttle bus between the airport and Hulhumale that runs every 30 minutes or so. The fare is 20 MVR.

Bike, scooters & co Maldives

There are no bike rental companies in the Maldives, and for good reason... the islands are often too small to even ride a bike. Nevertheless, if you stay on a big island (tourist or local), ask the reception of your hotel, because the loan of a bike is then possible.

With a driver Maldives

Taxis are available right outside the airport in Male. It costs 25 MVR for any trip to Male, 60 MVR from the airport to Male or Hulhumale and 70 MVR from Hulhumale to Male.

By car Maldives

There are only two islands on which you can drive in the Maldives: Malé and Addu City. Therefore, there is no reason to rent a car. If you are visiting either of these two islands, opt for a taxi.

Accessibility Maldives

Few islands have paved paths, but the paths are often made of compacted coral. It is therefore possible (but not necessarily easy) to move around in a wheelchair or with a stroller. Some resorts have electric carts, especially when the island is large, or the pontoons of the villas on stilts are endless. Don't hesitate to ask the hotel if you have trouble getting around.

Tourist traps Maldives

The Maldives is a safe destination and you will never be bothered by touts or have to worry about pickpockets when visiting Male or a local island. Still, keep an eye on your belongings at the beach and avoid traveling with all your savings. While the locals are honest, some tourists are less so.
