In Mauritius, it is the most important Catholic festival. Unlike the Hindu festivals which are spectacular and often followed by the other communities (and sometimes by European tourists who find a change of scenery), it is mostly celebrated in family - that is to say most often at the beach for the big traditional picnic on Easter Monday. As the day is not a public holiday, the absenteeism rate reaches records on the island! It is an opportunity to attend a beautiful local mass and to live on the beach in a festive atmosphere
