On October 31, 1922, His Majesty Preah Bet Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk Varman was born in Phnom Penh. Despite his death in October 2012 at almost 90 years old, Cambodians still commemorate the birthday of their former ruler. The former king is much loved by his people and considered the father of modern Cambodia, which he gained independence from the French protectorate, and held the reins for many years. Cambodians celebrate him as a hero of the people, and this day is important for many families.
