DANSES SOUFIS

Dance Event

Every Friday evening from mid afternoon. Free. This kind of spectacle can be seen in all countries where Sufi Islam is a major component of society. And that is the case in Sudan. So go to 16-17 h, depending on the season (outside Ramadan), on the tomb of the Sheikh Sufi of the th century, Hamed al-Nile, south of Omdurman. The ceremony begins with the passage of the adjoining cemetery, the sound of the drums and songs of the participants. In clothes and banners, green dominates. The colour of Islam, of course, but also of the brotherhood that organizes these rites each week, traditionally called in dhikr sufi. Because it is a question of rites, not organized for tourists but for members of the religious community, who come to pray, sing and dance to forget between friends their daily lives or ask for a favor for Allah. Some of these dances have strong similarities with the well-known ones of the turners turners. You turn on yourself, or you can take a long look at the back while repeating the chahada (the Muslim faith profession), waiting to enter directly into contact with the Almighty.

This show is an indispensable requirement for foreign visitors to Khartoum. The disadvantage is that it is taking place at the same time as the Nuba fighting in Bahri. Photographs are allowed (except in the graveyard) but a respectful attitude towards assistance is recommended. You will always be warmly welcomed if you show your interest and respect for local cultures.
