Historical center

The historic city center stretches along a peninsula at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. At the heart of the city lies Mount Phousi, a hill on which stands a large golden stupa, That Chomsi. This district, now residential, stretches around Sisavangvong and Sakkarine streets. It's here that you'll find all the must-see monuments: Mount Phousi, the National Museum, the most beautiful sacred temples, the old French colonial mansions, as well as charming shops: accommodation, restaurants, cafés, boutiques... Not forgetting the various markets, such as the night market or the Hmong craft market. It's a great place to stroll. It's easy to explore on foot or by bike. At the foot of Mount Phousi, along the Khan River as far as the old French bridge, you'll find a district more popular with backpackers , with several nice establishments.

Around the peninsula

Luang Prabang is made up of small villages, or ban, which traditionally bear the name of their vat. Street names often vary from one map to another.

Crossing the Nam Khan via the old French bridge or a bamboo footbridge (during the dry season only), you discover another side of Luang Prabang, and the villages of Ban Phan Luang, Ban Phonsaath, Ban Phanluang, Ban Sangkhong (airport), Ban Phasouk (Vat Taohai), and further north: Ban Xang Khong, Ban Pha Khom. The northern bus station is located in this area at Vat Xang Khong.

The Phou Vao district extends past Ban That Luang and Ban Mano. It includes some accommodation, as well as administrative establishments. Further south, in the area outside the city center, you'll find the southern bus station (Naluang) and a number of nightlife venues, including the Dao Fa discotheque.
