In Kinshasa and in the major cities, most international brand stores are located in malls that are accessible from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. except on Sundays. There are also countless stores selling a wide range of articles of various qualities, most often imported from Asia. For the street trade, it is all day long, you can find everything at any time.
When it comes to shopping, Kinshasa and Lubumbashi in particular are home to a growing number of malls. These large, air-conditioned shopping malls are lined with clothing boutiques selling more or less well-known brands. Otherwise, you'll find just about anything in street stores.
On the other hand, few boutiques and galleries sell local crafts or works of art. These are more likely to be found on the streets, at hotel entrances or in certain markets (in Kinshasa, at the marché des valeurs). Statuettes from the world of Tintin are legion, but of uneven quality. Jewelry, wooden masks, various minerals. Bargaining is an integral part of the buying process.
Markets. A daily presence just about everywhere. Of particular note is the Grand Marché de Kinshasa, also known as the Marché Central. It is located to the east of the Botanical Gardens. It was Kinshasa's largest market until the opening of the Marché de la Liberté, created by Laurent Désiré Kabila in the commune of Masina. It's more an attraction than a market. In a feverish atmosphere, you can find absolutely everything, alive or dead, raw or cooked, in bulk or in bags.
Fabrics. Apart from a few malls and shopping centers in Kinshasa, Lubumbashi and Goma, the DRC is not exactly the world's trendiest shopping destination. However, colorful fabrics such as wax and kitenge are superb and available at good prices. It's also possible to have a dress or shirt made. The price you'll be asked to pay is indicative, so it's up to you to negotiate.
