LIAMBISSI FOUNDATION with the TORTUES LUTH :

The program

Gabon is the world's first nesting site for Leatherback turtles. On the coasts, four species of marine turtles (Lutes, Olive Ridley, Green and Hawksbill) come to lay their eggs from September to April. For several years now, a Gabonese Marine Turtle Partnership (PTMG) has been set up to protect these endangered species. The participation of the LIAMBISSI Foundation started in 2011, three other sites are part of it: the beaches of the Protected Areas of Pongara, Mayumba and the complex of Protected Areas of Gamba. Marine turtles face many anthropological and natural threats. Beach pollution, logs, fishing nets and poaching wreak havoc every year. The Foundation is there to prevent some of these threats by preparing and checking the beach every day during the season and recovering endangered nests for hatchery use.

A plot of land at Fort de l'eau (Port-Gentil) was graciously made available to the foundation to set up a turtle awareness site and a hatchery. Two technicians trained by the PTMG in Libreville live on site and scour the beach several times a day in search of new nests for counting. In addition, since October 2013, the LIAMBISSI Foundation has opened the doors of the Port-Gentil marine turtle program to the public in order to raise awareness. About ten people are available to accompany the technicians on their journey on Friday and Saturday evenings. However, they must first take part in a 45-minute presentation on turtles to improve their knowledge of the animal but also on the right gestures to adopt. The Foundation has also set up an awareness-raising programme for children aged 8 to 12 and travels from school to school to meet its future ambassadors.

Gabon's fauna and flora are in danger, and it is therefore important to raise awareness among the population, especially among children, who are the future generation, about respect for the environment and the protection of fauna and flora. A group of 3 technicians travel from school to school to explain the basics of sustainable development to children between 8 and 13 years old. The sessions take the form of games, lectures and an animated film on a problem raised by the Foundation (Sammy, Rio, ...). Raising children's awareness allows us to reach the actors of tomorrow by instilling in them a certain vision of nature today. The Foundation hopes to see them act in the right direction once they are adults.
