What to visit Chad?

When to go to Chad?

If you're wondering "When to go to Chad?", here are a few points to help you make your choice.

Ideal periods according to climate

The best time to visit Chad is from October to April. During this period, the climate is more pleasant, especially in the desert north where temperatures become bearable. From May to September, on the other hand, is the rainy season in the south. It is characterized by regular downpours, making certain journeys difficult due to flooded roads.

High/low season rates

When should you travel to Chad? The high tourist season generally runs from November to March. This is when accommodation prices rise. If you're looking for more affordable deals, consider a trip during the low season, between April and October. But bear in mind the climatic constraints mentioned above.

Notable events

If you travel to Chad in December, you'll be able to attend the National Holiday on December1, a highlight of Chadian culture. Other traditional events may also punctuate your trip, depending on the region and the month.

Regions

North (Tibesti region): the months from October to February are ideal. Temperatures are mild, giving you the chance to explore the Tibesti mountains in good conditions. Avoid the extremely hot summer months.

South (Moundou region): leave between November and May. The rainy season, while offering lush green landscapes, complicates travel.

The best time to travel to Chad depends on your budget and the experiences you wish to enjoy. Let's hit the road!

Chad has a diverse climate, with three main zones.

In the north, the climate is desert-like, with very high temperatures, particularly between June and August. The Tibesti region, for example, experiences temperatures in excess of 40°C during the high season.

Central Chad, especially around N'Djamena, has a tropical savannah climate. Temperatures are moderate, but variations between the high and low seasons are notable, with a rainy season from June to September.

The south of the country enjoys an equatorial climate, characterized by high humidity and regular rainfall. Moundou and the surrounding area are particularly wet during the low season, which generally extends from May to October.

Things to note

Temperatures in Chad vary enormously according to zone and season, making each trip unique depending on the month and location chosen.

Budget

Chad, the vast territory of Central Africa, is an expensive destination compared with other African countries. The official currency is the CFA franc, which is stable thanks to its peg to the euro, although travelers should be alert to any fluctuations.

As far as transactions are concerned, it is preferable to carry cash, especially when outside the capital N'Djamena. Credit cards are only accepted in major hotels and establishments in the capital. Remember to exchange enough currency on arrival, as exchange offices are rare outside the major cities.

Gratuities are welcome, and for accommodation, expect variable costs. In eco mode, accommodation is simple but decent. For greater comfort, higher-category establishments offer additional services and facilities. And for premium service, international standards are present in N'Djamena.

Procedures

To immerse yourself in the vast Saharan and Sudanese expanses of Chad, a visa is required. Chad visas can be obtained from Chadian embassies or consulates abroad. The procedure and time required to obtain a visa may vary, so be sure to check well in advance of your departure.

A passport valid for at least six months after the date of entry is also required. Travelers may also be asked to provide proof of yellow fever vaccination, especially if they come from a region where this disease is endemic.

Certain regions of Chad require special permits to be visited, due to security considerations. It is advisable to check with the local authorities or your embassy before travelling to these areas. Please note that it is impossible to obtain a Chadian visa directly at the border.

When moving between towns, you must present your passport. If you are traveling on business, it is strongly recommended that you have a mission order.

Interesting facts

The best way to enter Chad is via N'Djamena airport, by air. Keep yourself informed about security risks before you leave!

Health

Traveling to Chad is an exhilarating adventure, but it also requires special attention. One of the first steps before venturing into Chadian territory is to consult a doctor specializing in travel medicine. Several Chad vaccines are recommended, or even required, for travelers. Vaccination against yellow fever is compulsory to enter Chad, and it is advisable to be up to date with other common vaccines such as tetanus, diphtheria, poliomyelitis and hepatitis A and B.

The question of drinking water in Chad is of the utmost importance. We strongly advise against drinking tap water. Always use sealed bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth. If you find yourself without access to bottled water, be sure to boil the water for at least 10 minutes or use purification tablets.

Protection against malaria is also essential. Chad is a malaria-endemic zone. Take prophylactic medication before, during and after your stay, and protect yourself from mosquitoes with mosquito nets and repellents.
